The internet is like an online vault. Everything you post, share, take a photo of, etc. is documented in one way or another and locked away forever, never to be deleted. That’s why it is so important to build a positive digital footprint. We hear about the adverse effects of a negative online presence, but how do we go about creating a positive digital presence that will benefit both our personal and professional lives?
First of all, decide what image you want to convey and to what audience. Then, think about your brand. Do you have skills that you’re trying to market? How will your online reputation affect what you’re trying to accomplish? Next, don’t put something out there that isn’t true or an honest representation of yourself. It’s easy to get caught up in being impressive rather than begin genuine.
There are benefits to building a positive digital presence such as advantages when applying to college, increased job opportunities, more likely to be promoted or considered for increase in salary, confidence and trust from others, and confidence in how you are perceived by those around you. Building your online reputation starts early and takes time, discernment, and awareness. How we represent ourselves in the online world is just as important as how we represent ourselves in the real world.
